“Whatever Happened To My Party?”: An Interview With The Common Man

The Common Man is a regular reader and commenter here on A Lady of Reason. I have enjoyed much of his sensible and insightful comments he’s made on the blog. He’s graciously taken the time and given me the honor of giving me an interview with him over the subject of how he used to be a Democrat, but ultimately turned away from the party. This is his perspective as a fellow conservative.

So, tell me a little about yourself first:

I’ve been a teacher for 41 years at New England schools and colleges. My family members were moderate Democrats. From a young age, I’ve been a part of the workforce and both my upbringing and my present status is that of a middle class working individual. I am married, have a daughter and am a home owner.

In your correspondence with me, you said you used to be a Democrat. Could you tell me a little more about that?

The Democratic Party has changed substantially from the 1960’s to the present. Since that time there have been many changes in the party for the negative. I’ll list some of the major points in no specific order. The continued support of a welfare system initially intended to assist persons and families who were at risk evolved into a lifestyle in poorer communities where we see individuals and families accepting welfare as a substitute for education, training, and employment which would contribute to their towns, cities, and ultimately, the country. The civic leaders of these poorer communities became part of the problem, but furthering programs that allow them to prosper, while creating a dependency in their consistency on the welfare checks, child support checks, food stamps, Section 8 housing, free medical services on and on… All of it being supported by US citizens who actually work and contribute to our society. That imputes the system, and the civic leaders. When my family members immigrated to this country, they were required to have a job waiting for them here in America. They came, they worked, and became American citizens paying taxes, and helping to build their communities as productive people. This was the American Dream. The liberal concept of uncontrolled, wide open borders with an unlimited amount of drain resulting on our schools, medical facilities, police forces, and of course, the taxpayers who pay for it all was not a reality in past years. The Democratic concept of building a voting constituency based upon people entering the country illegally, became a reality. I like all fair minded people became disenchanted with the party.

What were the first inklings of discontent for your support of the party and when did they start to happen?

It started with the Clintons. I began to recognize that Washington was operating above the law and although busy with raising a family and working two jobs, I kept my eyes and ears open for changes within the party. As I saw in more recent times that enemies of the United States, such as Al-Qaeda, became emboldened with a more far left liberal series of changes within the laws. I realized the the obvious that we were providing these types of groups with free reign to come here and make their violent statements. Global powers who seeked to benefit from the willingness of our government to make trade deals that favored them, and weakened America’s economy. When President Obama took office, I had hoped he, being a man of color, we would see a re-imagining of how America assists people of color in impoverished urban settings. In fact, he campaigned to people of color strongly indicating that he would reform their educational systems, they way that they are dealt with in criminal situations, and in general their entire socio-economic challenges. This did not happen. The facts are that he clearly emboldened through direct action, a number of countries while weakening our position militarily, and economically, resulting in huge advantages for them and putting the United States last. This is a globalist, far-left, Marxist series of actions delivered to the American people by a well dressed, well spoken, smooth talking gentleman president.

In brief, what was the eventual tipping point in leaving the Democratic party?

All of this came to a head in the Clinton vs. Trump election for the presidency. When the truth outed that the Clintons had long engaged in elitist, highly questionable practices regarding the law, their finances, fundraising, and use of what can only be termed as underhanded manipulation of the former, I started to have doubts about her as our president. On the other side, Trump, who I’ve always seen as kind of a brute, seemed to be less able to hide his past and who he was as a high powered millionaire businessman, a person who had many women and affairs, and spent time as a celebrity with men’s programming such as the Spike Channel on cable TV, etc. These weaknesses and events seemed to be while troubling, were somehow less so than the Obama-Clinton union. Let me add also that, I grew up in a household with strong women, with a father and grandfather who taught me no prejudices against women, but to admire how strong a woman can be.

The Nation has been polarized greatly since the 2016 Presidential Election. Have you been all that politically active before then? And if not, what made you now?

Here before like many working family men, I was not overly involved in politics. The culmination of all that I have stated above coming to light drew me to become involved on a level a level I had not before.

Much of the Conservative side has been unpopular and greatly censored since. I know I have struggles being a closeted conservative, yet speaking out here on A Lady of Reason. How do you deal with the backlash and vitriol of the radical liberals?

The Democratic party has enjoyed control of the greater majority of all of our media here in America for at least 25 years. Now that real opposition has taken place in the form of the election of a Republican president, the voice of the Democratic party has become increasingly far-left, radical, desperate and divisive. When I fact check what I’m seeing in magazines, newspapers, online and in 95% of the media, I find that the majority of it is untrue. Like most Americans, I will listen to the truth, regardless of what your party is. However, when I am lied to by powers who call themselves quote “news”, I am then compelled to label these entities unreliable and on the payroll of the far-left. This problem is pervasive and as a full time teacher teaching ages four though adult I have observed firsthand the teachers’ union including college professors indoctrinating young people toward an ideology that is politically Left. In essence, quote “growing” a huge constituency of future Democratic voters. It is the mandate of a teacher to instruct their students to learn both sides of any debate, ideology, or faith and then having researched these topics, make their own decisions. This has not happened! These are some of the key points to why I reached the turning point leading me away from the Democratic party and coming to the sad reality that this can no longer be my party.

Have you ever had a negative experience in person with a radical liberal?

I am smart enough and I’m old enough to know that the type of discussion that you have fostered with your important blog will when discussed face to face with this group will ultimately not lead to fair discourse. I have no desire to be accused of being a racist, homophobe, misogynist, and any other number of devices used to shout down any person that presents factual evidence contrary to this growing far left liberal ideology, and as seen in more recent times, beyond that, many if these groups have resorted to physical violence which I will not engage in unless my back is against the wall and a matter of life and death. Therefore I do not put myself in that position. May we hope it never comes to that.

Thank you for your time thus far, but I want to end with one last question: What is your advice for fellow closeted conservatives that want to speak out?

You need to invest time in researching the truth and since you will find overwhelmingly, that your magazines, newspapers, internet and TV is 95% controlled by the Left, you will have a hard time fining the facts. It takes a lot of work to shift through and filter out what is really taking place. Remember that Fascism as seen by Italy’s Mussolini and the 3rd Reich started as a controlling of all that people see and heard in their media. What we’re seeing now is a mass blanketing of all that we see and hear with a far left agenda. If a person is not willing to do the digging, they will be kept in the dark, and worse than that, likely to simply follow in lockstep with what others are doing. In conclusion I’d like to say to you, Lady of Reason, what you have provided us giving voice to topics with factual accounting is crucial. I for one know this is what all of our citizens need in order to make rational decisions for our country’s well-being.

  1. A rebuttal:

On accepting welfare as a substitute for education, training, and employment:
Have you been on welfare? I was for a brief period in the late 1990’s. Applying for, receiving, and keeping welfare is a full-time job. You have to show up with a list of every job you applied to, and the contact person so they can call to make sure you’re being honest. And they do. Our government does not offer low-cost job training, employment opportunities, or low-cost education via the welfare office. I thought welfare was only slightly harder than completing a Master’s thesis. The cycle is, the person works 1-2 jobs at minimum wage and can’t afford to live. If the person has kids, it’s worse. They have to take sick days for their child, they have to have access to medical care, they have to pay for childcare before and or after school. They put their low paying job at risk because they do not have a lot of rights within the parameters of their job. They want to get a decent paying job, but education seems out of their reach. Maybe they can get financial aid, a pell grant, etc. Maybe even a scholarship, but what about food, housing, books, supplies, etc. They have to continue to work a lot of hours at the minimum wage job, letting their school work take a back seat, thus perhaps losing a scholarship due to harsh life situation. Student loans today are out of hand largely due to the sharp increase in college tuition. College is no longer a place where anyone can go. It is becoming more and more elite.
I live in Norway now (moved here 4 years ago). We are a welfare state. Our unemployment benefits feature free job re-training into a new field of work if desired, or if necessary. Weekly job fairs that are easy to attend. All jobs here pay at least $20/hour, meaning that virtually no one can find themselves in a situation of not being able to live, making government welfare mostly only necessary to the disabled (intellectual and physical). If everyone in America had access to universal healthcare, imagine how much medical costs would drop. I paid 24% taxes in the US, plus I had an insurance premium, co-pays, and deductibles, had to save for college for my boys, and for my retirement. This put me up to at least 40% of my salary if not more. Now I pay 32%. University will be tuition-free for my boys (they will need to buy books, and a living space). My pension comes out of my tax, plus My job puts in an additional 5%. I pay a co-pay every time I go to the dr. Once I hit about $350, everything is free including prescriptions until Jan 1st. Prescriptions are cheap because the government does not allow drug companies to set the prices. I can buy private insurance as well, and it is very affordable due to the low-cost of medical services. I have found I do not need it though. Imagine how much cheaper healthcare would be if 300 million people paid $30 a month out of their paycheck, had to meet a $350/$400 cap, etc. The cost of medical care and procedures would drop because everyone would be covered and paying. In the long run, it would be so much cheaper than medicare and medicaid which are a joke. Every sick person that goes into an emergency room uninsured gets medical care, which is then charged back to the state. This stuff is coming out of your taxes, yet you are not benefitting for it, and it is not helping the greater good of society.

    The borders are wide open:
How do you think most illegal immigrants get to the United States? Over half of illegal immigrants arrive on a travel visa and just never go back, or arrive via border crossing cards and never go back. Our borders are more secure than they have ever been, and this is backed by statistical scientific findings. Also, illegal immigration has been steadily decreasing since 2005. Immigration from Mexico has decreased by 57% from 2008-2012 (Pew Research). Fact: The borders have never been so secure. There is no indication that people coming illegally are being allowed to vote. If and when this is happening it is a clear case of voter fraud. A more serious issue is Russia hacking into our voting machines, and influencing our political discourse.

Enemies of the state emboldened by the left:
Like Russia is emboldened to meddle in our democracy and has not been condemned by the current administration? Like pandering to Kim Jong Un and treating him with more respect than our European allies? Like pandering to the Prince of Saudi Arabia, and just taking his word? When Saudia Arabia has produced those members of Al Qaeda that our government sanctions and gives a free pass to? I would say there are plenty of enemies of state emboldened by the right as well.

Obama is a far left Globalist:
I am a moderate conservative, and I was not a big fan of Obama, because I felt that he was too conservative and didn’t change anything very much from the Bush era. Globalist, maybe. Far left, no way.

Clinton vs. Trump election, with Clinton being more corrupt:
As a disclaimer, I can’t stand Hillary Clinton, or the Clinton’s in general. I do believe that she is corrupt and she panders to the lobbies that support her and her foundation. But, Trump is easily as crooked as she is. They should most likely be locked up together. Trump has lied about so much, that it’s impossible and exhausting to keep up with. From Russian ties and investments, tax fraud, Saudi Arabia, hush money, etc. He and Hillary make a perfect pair.

Democrats are radical, desperate and divisive:
I agree with that there are certain liberal groups that fit that description, just as there are certain conservative groups that fit that same description. It is turning a blind eye to what is actually happening in the country by not seeing that it takes two to tango. You have to be able to see the contributions by your own party as well. Saying all liberals do this, and all conservatives do that is extremely short-sighted and does nothing to address or dampen the current situation. Democracy is for everyone. That means no one party will get everything they want or think is right. If this were the case, it would not be a democracy anymore. Remember, the Republicans control the house, the Senate, and now the judicial branch.

Far left liberals resorting to increasing violence:
Factually both the far left and the far right are resorting to increasing violence.

The nation has been polarized since the 2016 election:
Wrong. The nation has been becoming increasingly polarized over the last two decades. Some argue that it began with the 24-hour news cycle (Fox, MSNBC, CNN).

    Democratic party controls the media:
No, they do not. News can show a definite bias, and that is something the reader needs to be aware of. One thing I think is really great here in Norway is that a newspaper or tv news has to pay a fine if they print/broadcast anything that cannot be factually backed up. Maybe try reading foreign press in regards to the US. Most of Europe is strict about reporting factual based news, and calling out non factual.

The Third Reich started controlling what people saw and heard:
This only happened after the Reich won the peoples’ trust. Before they were able to control it, they had to poison the peoples’ minds against the press (hence the use of Lügenpresse, or lying press). Hitler launched a huge campaign to his rabid followers that they couldn’t believe what they were seeing, hearing, and reading (fake news). He told the truth, everyone else was lying. He was charismatic enough and had a following that had blinders on to everything besides him as a leader. Only then was the Reich able to actually control the media for propaganda purposes.

Anyway, I wanted to point out that by seeing one side as being inherently right/good and the other side as being inherently bad/wrong, you are a part of the problem and not the solution.

  2. Luckily online there are ways for people that think to look for information. So complete control of the press is not possible.

It is why the media talks about fake news, it really annoys them that with all their money and ownership of presses they can’t keep the truth completely suppressed.

So they turn to labelling the enemy as a tactic to make it seem like a non view not worthy of thought or discussion

    • Great point! Haven’t though of it that way before 🙂 Censorship is their only option to suppress those who are able to seek out the truth for themselves! Just shows the immense fear the liberals have of being exposed as frauds in denial!

  3. Closeted conservative wow are things that bad ? I’ve read posts by closeted gays and atheists but that takes the biscuit. I think you will find most of these so called left – wingers are not really left at all its just a sort of way of protesting against the rich who they view with envy and would like to change places with. At heart we all seek the great freedom of riches especially if we are condemned to work for a living in a monotonous job to support a family.
The world and every country in it has a wealth pyramid and those lower down seek to climb higher up , some legally and others illegally. Some are fortunate and have a head start which is due to the luck of being born into a rich nation or a rich family , others are born with talent that when honed will bring in the cash.
Take me I’m 76 and retired living in the UK and I’m told below the poverty line , but a little calculation places me in the top 2% globally. A fully qualified nurse in the NHS is in the top 1%! Of course you must remember one third of the globe live on $2 per day .
I’ve never met anyone who has enough have you ?

  4. I read The Common Man’s interview with great interest. In it he states the facts clearly without lying , spinning the truth as is all too common the case with the far left “snow flake” and media types. This kind of post is what is needed to help sway fair minded , reasonable people to look more deeply into finding the truth about the huge disinformation campaign being leveled at the public from all sides. This type of post will garner you respect from the growing amount of people who are a largely silent majority of moderate minded, responsible people. Silent that is until voting day !

    Great job !
